Granite

Appearances

Granite Worktops is a coarse-grained, light-coloured igneous rock formed by cooling down of molten lava under the earth's crust. Taking a closer look at the mineral composition will give you an understanding of the pattern and colour of the slabs. Feldspar, abundantly found in granite, constitutes pink, grey, or reddish pigments. Quartzite is a colourless, transparent mineral.

Heat Resistance

Granite surfaces are not affected or damaged from heat by other objects. It’s also knowledge that granite surfaces are extremely good for baking and the ingredients love the heat absorbing material.

Scratch Resilience

Granite surfaces are highly resistant to scratches. Cutting directly on the work surface may leave metal residues but can be removed by a specialist.

Maintenance

Granite surfaces have a easy and low-cost maintenance treatment that we can supply and apply. It is less likely for granite surfaces to be damaged by staining if treated every five to ten years.

Durability

Granite kitchen tops have been widely used for interior and exterior applications since many centuries. They are extremely strong and durable.

Quartz

Appearances

Quartz is an engineered stone that maintains a naturally beautiful look. The stunning appearance is determined by the size of granules used in the manufacture process. Using finer granules will result in a steady pattern and appearance. Larger crystals will create a flecked appearance, similar to granite surfaces. As Quartz is an engineered stone there is a degree of control over the make-up of the material that results in having an extensive range of colours, veining and textures, ranging from neutral earthy tones to bold vibrant hues. There is always something to match your individuality and personal taste.

Heat Resistance

Quartz worktops have the capacity to resist short term exposure to heat without causing damage or discolouration to the work surface. Regular and prolonged periods of heat exposure can cause cracking to occur due to the rapid temperature changes and discolouration in areas of contact as a result of the resin content in engineered stone. To avoid undesirable consequences, we recommend using a pot stand or trivet under a hot skillet or pot.

Scratch Resilience

Quartz is resilient and durable, designed to be a functional work-surface for modern families. With the small amount of resin content this results in what is known as flexural strength, this aspect aids to its durability when it comes to cracks, chips and blowouts. Like Granite, cutting directly on the work surface will blunt utensils and may leave metal residues but can be removed by our specialists.

Maintenance

Quartz worktops are mechanically polished and have a non-porous top surface. This means quartz will not absorb water or other fluids. Additional sealing is not required meaning this material is relatively maintenance-free other than general housekeeping. This is a major advantage when compared to other natural stone materials for worktop applications. For general upkeep we recommend warm soapy water and microfibre cloths, buff to a sheen with a dry microfibre to remove any cleaning residues. Avoid any abrasive or acidic cleaning products as regular use can dull the shine. Specialist cleaning products for natural and engineered stone are available.

Durability

Quartz is mainly suited for interior projects, because of the resin in the make-up of the material, it reacts with UV light and discolours over time. However, this stone is the perfect choice for kitchen and bathroom applications because of its extremely low porosity and maintenance free aspects.

Slate

Appearances

Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism (low pressure and temperature.) It is the finest grained foliated metamorphic rock. Mainly available in two popular finishes, Riven and Honed. The former being rough textured giving the classic appearance of slate, the latter has a smooth touch and consistent finish.

Heat Resistance

Natural slate is energy efficient and fire resistant. Because of its good electrical insulation and fireproof nature, it was used in the early 20th century for designing electric switchboards and relay controls for large electric motors. It’s a great candidate for fireplaces and hearths because of its fire-resistant nature.

Scratch Resilience

Slate is a durable stone with high tensile strength however, it is softer than the likes of granite, quartz (engineered stone) and quartzite and will scratch if precautions aren’t taken. Scratches can be repaired by our specialists on honed slate.

Maintenance

Akin to granite and other natural stones, Slate requires the same treatment process of applying a specialist sealant. For everyday cleaning, wash down your slate with soapy water, avoid using abrasive cleaning products. When you have removed all dirt and grease, wash the slate off with clean water and a clean cloth, this will remove any soap residues. Specialist cleaning products for natural and engineered stone are available.

Durability

Slate is a remarkable material suitable to be used for exterior projects because of its extremely low water absorption quality, making the material almost waterproof. This property also makes them resistant to frost damage and breakage by freezing conditions outside. Slates durable nature makes it suitable for roofing, flooring, stair treads, sidewalk slabs, paving stones, cladding, fireplaces, hearths and worktops. They are also used for manufacturing bench tops in laboratories because of their thermal stability and chemically inert nature. Natural slate is admired by building professionals for its durability and elegant look.

Quartzite

Appearances

Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz and sandstone. Sandstone is converted into quartzite through the process of metamorphism, changing pre-existing rocks into new forms as a result of increases in temperature, pressure, and chemically active fluids. Pure quartzite is usually white to grey, though quartzites often occur in various shades of pink and red due to varying amounts of hematite. Other colours, such as yellow, green, blue and orange, are due to other minerals.

Heat Resistance

Natural stones withstand heat with great efficiency and Quartzite is no exception. This stone is incredibly tough and durable, it comes in slightly higher than granite on the Mohs scale (scale of mineral hardness). While you can place hot items onto Quartzite with no immediate threat of damage or discolouration, its always good practice to use a trivet or pot stand to eliminate any risk.

Scratch Resilience

Quartzite is highly resistant to scratches and etching. Cutting directly on the work surface will blunt utensils and may leave metal residues but can be removed by our specialists.

Maintenance

Being a natural stone, Quartzite is subject to the same treatment process of applying specialist sealant to achieve a non-porous finish on the surface.

Durability

With its grand and lustrous appearance Quartzite is apt for statement pieces such as feature walls, cladding, floor tiles, decorative fireplaces/hearths, splashbacks and is becoming increasingly popular as a choice for worktops.
